Mental disability-
This is called Mental illness or Psychiatric disorder is a behavioral problem, causing impairment of personal functioning. This may be persistent or relapsing. Some mental illnesses are Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis, Trauma-related disorder, Mental retardation, and Insanity. Mental retardation is an Intellectual disability [ID] and a The psychological term for those who have a very low IQ and problem in daily functioning. There are four levels of ID, Mild, Moderate, Severe, and Profound. ID means the brain has not developed properly and may not function with normal range. Past medical professionals called this as “Mental Retardation”.
There may be disabilities of Speech, Learning, Physical and Social activities. Any patient of ID may present various symptoms depends on The level of disability such as Delayed milestones, Sitting Crawling and Walking later than other children, Improper speech, Lac of memory, poor understanding, Inability to think logically, Childish behavior in compression of age, Lac of curiosity, IQ below 70 and Lac of independency in communication and interaction with others. ID child may have some behavior problem like Aggression, Social distancing, Attention seeking activities, The tendency of self-injury, Intolerance of frustration, and Psychotic disorders. Some ID patients may have short stature and abnormal facial expressions. ID is divided into four levels.
Mild ID – Child taking more time to talk, Full independent for self-care in a later age, Poor in reading and writing, Immaturity, Difficulties to take responsibilities of marriage and in parenting. IQ from 50 to 69.
Severe ID- Damaged or improper developed CNS, Motor impairment [muscle weakness and fatigue, poor sensation, and balance]. IQ from 20 to 34.
Profound ID- Unable to understand instructions and requests, Maybe immobility, Incontinence, Following only basic nonverbal/sign-language communication, Inability for own care independently, Need of constant help and supervision. IQ less than 20.
Causes of ID- Brain hypoxia at any age may cause ID like after any serious illness needed ventilator life support. Generally may occur at the time of birth called “ Birth hypoxia “ due to various region, Premature birth, Gestational trauma such as infection, toxemia, drugs or alcohol used by mother. Severe malnutrition, Chromosomal abnormalities as down syndrome, Lead or Mercury poisoning, Childhood illness Meningitis Measles or Whooping cough and Brain injury.
Treatment in modern medicine- Special education, Behaviour therapy, Occupational therapy, Counselling and some medicines.
Autism or Autism spectrum disorder [ASD]- Autism is a developmental disorder in which difficulties in social interaction and communication with repetitive behavior. Diagnosis is made on the bases of behavior and managed by behavior therapy. It is also known as ASD [autism spectrum disorder]. Autistic child is characterized by difficulty in social interaction, abnormal or obsessive attachment or interest in objects [rubber bands, keys, light switches]. Over or Under reaction to one or all five senses like sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing. Repeated action or body movements [hand flapping, rocking, spinning]. The most common cause of autism spectrum disorder may be Genetic factor and Causes of autism spectrum disorder no known single cause, abnormalities in brain structure, and function is accepted as its causative factor.
A leading psychiatrist Lain Mc Gilchrist has warned and said that constant use of technology such as smartphones is making today’s children borderline Autistic behavior. There is no test for autism spectrum disorder during pregnancy. Early signs of ASD are No social smiling by 6 months of age, Poor eye contact, Not sharing interests and unusual attachment to anyone toy or object. There are some warning signs of ASD as No response to name, Hyperactivity, Impulsive [action without thinking], Aggression, Short attention, Self-injury, Abnormal eating, sleeping, and emotional reaction.
ASD is divided into 3 levels, Level 1st requires support and having difficulties in society, Level 2nd require substantial [more] support and Level 3rd requiring very substantial [much] support. ASD is incurable disorder but by therapy or by age growth it may goes away. Early age autism spectrum disorder may not last a lifetime, new study found that some children may disappear symptoms when they grow older.
Physical Disability- Physical disability is a lack or loss of ability to physical work, movement, and stamina. There are some challenging physical disabilities such as Cerebral palsy [CP], Spinal cord injury, Spina bifida [birth defect in which spinal cord fail to develop properly], Multiple sclerosis [MS], Musculoskeletal injuries [back injury] and muscular dystrophy. Physical disability may be congenital [from birth] and acquire [later after birth] due to injury during birth or genetic problems. Physical disabilities in children can be minimized by taking proper nutrition and vitamins [calcium, iron, folic acid, and vitamins], avoid harmful things like alcohol tobacco and smoking, keep a healthy lifestyle, and proper medical supervision during pregnancy and at the time of the birth of the child.
Cerebral palsy- Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder due to nonprogressive brain injury or malformation of the developing brain, first, it affects body movements and muscle coordination. Cerebral palsy affects the muscle’s movements, tone, and posture of body, it is a group of disorders occurs due to damage of immature brain most often before birth. It’s signs and symptoms appear during infancy and at an early age [6 months to 2 years or preschool age].
The main cause of cerebral palsy is a brain injury or Malformation of developing brain before, during, or after birth. Damage during brain development muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, muscle reflex, body posture, and balance become affected. The early signs are Late learning to sitting, standing and walking, Not able to hold the head, Low muscle tone, Muscle spasm feeling stiffness, Poor muscle control, and Delayed development of all activities. Spastic cerebral palsy is most common, the muscles feel stiff and movement looks jerky. It is a form of Hypertonia [increased muscle tone] results in difficult or impossible body movements. Another type is Hemiplegic cerebral palsy due to damage of one side of the brain resulting in Paralysis of one vertical half of the body. Treatment in modern medicine is Physio, Occupational, Speech, and recreational therapies.
